The Face Lift Procedure
If you are a Brampton, Oakville, Mississauga, or Toronto resident considering a face lift at our center, it will be helpful for you to understand the procedure. Prior to your surgery, Dr. Lista will provide you with a list of foods, beverages, vitamins, and medications that you should avoid. If you are a smoker, he'll advise you to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to your procedure because smoking affects blood flow and can cause problems with healing. If you have short hair, Dr. Lista will recommend that you grow it out somewhat so that it will obscure the incision areas while they heal.
Dr. Lista will perform your face lift personally at his Mississauga clinic. Because Dr. Lista is chief of plastic surgery at the Trillium Health Center, you may also choose to have your surgery at Trillium, if you prefer. Depending on Dr. Lista's recommendation and your preference, the procedure will be performed either while you are under local anesthesia with sedation or with general anesthesia administered by an anesthetic specialist who will remain with you through the entire surgery.
In the actual face lift procedure, also called a rhytidectomy, Dr. Lista makes incisions behind the hairline that begin at the temples and extend to behind the earlobe. If necessary to improve the neck's appearance, he will make a small incision under the chin. Our face lift expert then removes accumulated fat, tightens underlying muscle and membrane, and removes excess skin. He then uses sutures to close the incisions. The process takes several hours. It will be necessary for a companion to drive you home after the procedure and stay with you for 24 hours.
After the Face Lift
After your face lift, Dr. Lista may place a small tube under the skin behind the ear to allow any blood that collects to drain. Your head will be loosely wrapped in bandages to minimize swelling and bruising. Although discomfort is generally minimal after surgery, Dr. Lista can prescribe pain medication if you feel you need it. On the day following surgery, the tube or tubes will be removed and the heavy bandaging will be replaced with a much lighter dressing. At this point you can shower and wash your hair. However, when washing your hair, you must be gentle because the skin will be tender.
You should expect to take at least a week off from work after your face lift procedure. Many patients who visit our office serving the Brampton, Oakville, Mississauga, and Toronto area take two weeks to allow for sufficient healing after a face lift. You should avoid strenuous activity of any sort for at least two weeks. Activities that require extreme physical exertion, such as aerobics or weightlifting, should be avoided for at least a month. Dr. Lista will provide a full set of guidelines for your post-surgical care.

The Risks of Face Lift Surgery

However, some level of risk exists with any surgery. Because each patient has a unique physical makeup and medical history, a certain degree of uncertainty accompanies a face lift procedure. Injury to facial nerves, hematoma (collected blood), infection, and adverse reaction to anesthesia can occur. Problems with healing most often affect smokers. Dr. Lista provides full instructions about pre-surgical preparations and post-surgical care. By following these instructions diligently, our patients are able to reduce any risk substantially.
