What Are Saline Breast Implants?
Saline breast implants are silicone elastomer sacs that are empty when they are sent to our office from the manufacturer. Depending on the patient's body structure and/or goals for the breast enhancement procedure, Dr. Lista rolls the implant and inserts it through a small incision either under the chest muscle or immediately under the breast tissue (as described on our Breast Enlargement page). Once the implant is in place, Dr. Lista fills it to the proper proportion with a saline solution. Saline is a sterile salt solution that is completely natural to the body.
In filling the empty saline breast implants, Dr. Lista employs a "no-touch technique." The implant is coated with an antibiotic solution prior to placement. Then Dr. Lista fills it once is has been placed so that it never has contact with air. This and other advanced techniques greatly reduce the risk of infection and almost eliminate the possibility of capsular contracture, or squeezing of the implant by hardening scar tissue.
Who Should Have Saline Breast Implants?
For most of our patients from Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, and throughout Ontario, saline breast implants are an appropriate choice. They provide excellent breast augmentation that is both natural looking and feeling. Patients who have sagging breasts or adequate breast tissue find that saline breast implants placed under the breast tissue, on the chest muscle, give breasts both size and perkiness. Patients who are especially thin may choose to have their breast implants placed under the chest muscle or may opt for cohesive gel implants because saline breast implants can produce rippling in patients with a small frame.
